Colorado Jury Duty: How It Works
Jury Selection
Jurors for Colorado state courts are randomly selected from the Master Jury Wheel for a one-month term of service, occasionally longer.
Orientation and Examination
Upon selection, jurors attend an orientation and examination to learn about their duties and responsibilities.
Exemptions and Deferral
Individuals may be excused or deferred from jury duty if they:
- Are under 18 years old
- Have a physical or mental disability that prevents them from serving
- Have a prior jury service within the past two years
Grand Jury
In counties with a population of 100,000 or more, a grand jury is composed of 12 or 23 members and investigates criminal offenses.
Trial Jury
A trial jury consists of six or eight members and decides the guilt or innocence of the accused in criminal cases and the liability in civil cases.
Compensation and Timeframe
Jurors receive a daily stipend and mileage reimbursement for travel expenses. The length of service can vary depending on the length of the trial.
Importance of Jury Duty
Jury duty is a fundamental part of the justice system. By participating, individuals play a vital role in upholding the law and ensuring fair trials.
